Face The Wound was originally commissioned in 1995 by Spoken Word Artist and Bandleader Henry Rollins for release on his 2.13 CD label. Unfortunately work on the project was delayed due to a terminal diagnosis of Z’EV’s mother.
In 1998 he returned to work on it, completely revising what he had done so far, and recorded it in the summer of 1999 for its eventual release by Solielmoon.
Face The Wound blends Z’EV’s powerful rhythmic sensibilities with a hauntingly stark melodic conception to orchestrate a vocal narrative developed from cut-ups drawn from approximately 30 audio cassette tapes collected from thrift shops, garage sales and flea markets.
In keeping with his methodology of working with found materials, the narrative/libretto was developed from words and phrases gleaned and woven into a poetic whole from out these over 45 hours of cassettes.
The tapes range from Self-Help to Pyramid Marketing schemes to Media Evangelists to a tape from an answering machine used as evidence in a teenage harassment trial [supplied by a lawyer friend] to assorted lectures on a variety of subjects; from mythology to menopause, astrology to the John Birch Society, the fate of the Earth to substance abuse.
